Moseley School - A Language College
This case study describes collaboration between a maintained school and a mosque centred on improving teaching methods, providing a modern teaching environment, booster classes and facilitating community language GCSE exams.
Malaysian School of Manchester
The Malaysian complementary school collaborates with a maintained school to use their premises. The maintained school administers all the costs to sit the IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) Malay exams. The Assistant Head of the maintained school was a member of the complementary school steering committee in the early stages of the collaborative work. The partnership has been facilitated by the Diversity and Inclusion team (Children’s services) at Manchester City Council, who are also part of the Malaysian school’s steering committee. The complementary school is a recognised exam centre for Malay.
Wolverhampton City Council
Wolverhampton City Council has supported the provision of community language teaching and learning over the two last decades. Children’s progress is assessed using the Languages Ladder and they take the formal Asset Languages tests to accredit their learning. This case study gives top tips on how to create a good language learning environment.
Rustam Iranian School
This large Iranian supplementary school is a registered OCR examination centre and has 300 children attending. The school runs from maintained school premises and it has set up their own library and has access to the computer lab. Parents are actively involved in their children’s learning and children set their own learning targets.
Guru Nanak Gurdwara
This Panjabi supplementary school has provided Panjabi language classes to the local community for 20 years. Since a refocus in 2002 on accrediting learners’ language skills, the school grew from 15 to 125 students. They welcome children as young as 4 years old into classes which have proved a real success. Panjabi is taught up to GCSE, AS and A level with a high success rate. The Head teacher is currently exploring the potential of introducing Asset Languages qualifications.
Cardinal Newman Catholic School
The case study describes why and how partnership in the Polish language and GCSE exams was developed between a maintained and a Polish complementary school, and the positive impact the collaborative work has had on both schools in terms of pupil motivation and confidence.
Bristol Metropolitan College: Accreditation
The case study describes how a language college provides accreditation in 12 different languages, including community languages. The self esteem and confidence of students is raised as community languages are given equal importance to other Modern Foreign Languages.
Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan: Accreditation
Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan supplementary school has been delighted with the results of the Asset Languages Assessment Scheme, which they have implemented in Gujarati classes to help teachers and parents to monitor pupils’ progress.
Asian Resource Centre
The Asian Resource Centre runs a complementary school teaching eight community languages. They are an approved OCR, ICAA/EDEXCEL and AQA examination centre and work in partnership with a maintained school to use their premises. Both schools share good practice, test results and performance monitoring of pupils and help each other when needed.
