Regional Language Network London
April 2008
This research report, published by RLN London, explores the language skills of London's residents - and the reasons why we need to make the most of their talent. For the first time, UK-wide data from a recruitment agency population of 1.7 million is used to analyse the language skills available in London by comparison with the rest of the UK. This practical report also includes user-friendly information summaries and country profiles aimed for use by agencies in a wide range of contexts. The full report is available via the RLN website.
Our Languages: Teachers in Supplementary Schools and their Aspirations to Teach Community Languages
Institute for Policy Studies in Education, London Metropolitan University
31 March 2008
This original piece of research, conceived and funded by the Our Languages project, highlights the frustrations experienced by those working in the complementary/supplementary sector whose aspirations to work in the mainstream sector prove so difficult to realise. This study complements the recent Ofsted report, Every Language Matters, which explored the same issue from the perspective of community languages teachers working in mainstream schools. We hope this new, compelling evidence will lead to changes in the structuring of Initial Teacher Education (ITE) aimed at removing barriers and integrating into mainstream schools dedicated teachers whose commitment to the pupils from their communities is for the moment on a voluntary basis, but not always by choice. It outlines good practice in training and teaching, with a particular focus on addressing the barriers to the provision of initial teacher education (ITE) with respect to community languages. Please visit the Ofsted website to download the full report.
