Prayer is used here as a form of group activity that can help to foster a positive sense of belonging amongst pupils and emphasise shared language and culture.
As Muslims we have to pray five times, so while we are in the school there is a prayer that we have to perform – it’s called Dhohar which is before afternoon.
So we decided to have these prayers. Plus to have one activity, even if it is a prayer together, it’s like a team doing the same thing. So a group of people doing the same activity, belonging to the same culture, belonging to the same language, is really positive for them – to feel [a sense of] belonging to a group.
