The Head Teacher of the Woking Chinese Complementary School gives an overview of the school and its twenty year history.
Clip A
Our school was actually established twenty years ago and, at that time, we only had thirty students and we used a church at York Road, called the United Reform Church, which only had one room. So it was really small. But at that time we only had thirty students and we had few classes and no extra-curricular activities.
Clip B
In the next sixteen years, we only developed not much. We had one extra-curriculum which is Chinese dance.
Clip C
From 2002 increase of demand for Chinese Mandarin classes, so the one-room church, that space, would not hold the many classes anymore. So we had to look for a big premises, and luckily we found Saint John the Baptist school. And we’re very grateful to Saint John Baptist School, the head teacher, and the director of the languages.
Clip D
We have twenty classes. We have adult’s Mandarin – three classes, and we have children’s Mandarin - 11 classes, Cantonese class – five. And afternoon we have lots of lots of extra-curriculum, we have seven of them: Kung Fu, dance, gymnastics, lion dance, painting, Chinese instrument etc.
Clip E
I think the language cannot leave without a cultural, language and culture are one of another – are always related. In China, it is very important, if the children only learn language without a cultural, they’re not going to go anywhere.
Clip F
We have a good parents club, and most of the volunteers are come from parents. So again we’re very grateful for all the parents who volunteer to come to help and the teachers, also, most of them come from parents. So they fully support for their children to learn language and cultural –Chinese cultural.
Clip G
The parents, they have to pay a little fee for this Saturday school and for language, or if they want to join the afternoon activity, then pay another small amount fee.
Clip H
The teachers, most of them come from parents, and because their children are here, the parents will be very keen to teach to their children.
Clip I
Every year we have good amounts of students enter the GCSE and A Level examinations, and Saint John Baptist School help us a lot. We had good result. We are very proud of that, our student’s hard work.
