Two Turkish speaking children demonstrate introductions to the rest of the class who then join in.
The teacher greets the pupils in Turkish and the pupils respond.
Teacher: Okay, today in our lesson what we are going to do, we are going to do greetings, we are going to repeat it very quickly and then we are going to do classroom commands so we'll start with greetings.
Two Turkish speaking children go to the front of the class to demonstrate to the rest of the class.
Teacher’s commentary: In the classroom they [the Turkish children] support me; I use them like teaching assistants really. They support me in different ways like they're a good model for the other children. So it shows that if they can speak two languages the other children might think 'oh, I can do it as well'. Also it builds up some of the Turkish-speaking children's confidence as well. Sometimes they feel like, you know, they’re shy to speak their own languages, they think that they are different,so it builds up their confidence.
The Turkish pupils first greet each other in Turkish and then greet other pupils in the class.
The teacher then reads Turkish words while displaying images using PowerPoint and the pupils repeat out loud.
The teacher explains the next exercise in Turkish and then repeats the instructions in English:
Teacher: Now, I'm going to close this [PowerPoint slideshow] and you are going to do it by heart.
The teacher explains the instructions of the next exercise in Turkish and then again in English:
Teacher: Now I'm going to say it in Turkish and you’re going to do it physically. If I say 'kalk' you are all going to stand up. Okay. I know you like this game, don't you?
The teacher calls out actions in Turkish and the pupils respond by acting out what she is saying.
