IGCSE

The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is intended for 14–16 year olds. An IGCSE qualification prepares students for continued study, for example to A and AS level. IGCSE language qualifications have yet to be endorsed by QCA so do not carry points towards league tables for mainstream schools.

IGCSE Language qualifications are offered in the following languages in 2008:

First language: Afrikaans, Arabic, Chinese, Czech, Dutch, English, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Thai, Turkish
Second (or working) language: Afrikaans, English, Hindi, IsiZulu
Foreign language: Arabic, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Indonesian, Japanese, Malay, Mandarin Chinese, Portuguese, Spanish

The Chartered Institute of Linguists

The Chartered Institute of Linguists offers examinations covering all four skills in a wide range of languages at various levels. The Institute offers a Certificate in Bilingual Skills at Level 3 of the National Language Standards and a Level 4 (post A level) Diploma in Public Service Interpreting, both QCA accredited.
