About our school

Silverdale School, which opened in 1956, is an 11-18 mixed comprehensive school, serving the south west of Sheffield with 1238 students on roll. The school has an integrated resource unit for Profoundly Deaf children staffed by teachers from the Sheffield Service for Sensory Impaired Children. In recent years the number of applications for admission to Silverdale has exceeded the agreed admission limit of 180 pupils.

The curriculum has a broad range of AS/A2 subjects coupled with provision that is appropriate to student needs within a vocational framework through collaboration with other institutions. The post-16 Enrichment programme provides a range of accredited opportunities to develop personal and vocational skills. The school has a team of sixth form tutors who provide high quality guidance and one to one support for students applying to Higher Education. This is supported by links with a variety of institutions enabling students to sample aspects of the higher education experience, a PSHE programme including a dedicated HE day and parents evenings.

About our partnership

Silverdale School and Language College has been in a partnership with the Confucius Institute at Sheffield University as part of the Our Languages project. The main aim of the partnership has been to develop a series of ten lesson plans that will lead towards an Asset Languages qualification in Mandarin Chinese. Being able to gain an accredited qualification has been hugely motivational for students at Silverdale, and the school has benefited enormously from the expertise, creative talents and cultural knowledge of teachers at both the Star Mandarin School and the Confucius Institute. The school has also shared ideas with teachers from Somali and Polish language schools in Sheffield, as well as teachers from Springfield Primary School and King Edward VII School.
