About our school

Springfield School is the only true city centre school in Sheffield, serving one of the most deprived wards in the city, a multicultural community where most are Somali, Arabic, Yemeni, White British, Pakistani and Bangladeshi families. The area also includes homeless family accommodation, drug rehab and a domestic violence refuge. Many families were refugees or asylum seekers or are overseas students studying for an MA or PhD. At present there are 16 languages spoken in the school.

Their 5 priorities are: Raise attainment and achievement in English, Maths and Science, develop a relevant creative curriculum to meet the learning and cultural needs of children, promote and develop respect, self worth and self determination, develop independent learners and build successful families through family learning and family support.

About our partnership

Springfield School is introducing Somali as a language taught to all year 3 children. This is delivered by a Somali speaking teaching assistant with support from the class teacher who, together with the year 3 teaching assistant, is learning Somali along with the class. The aim of this is to support Somali parents in encouraging their children to speak Somali at home, to promote self-esteem amongst Somali children and raise the status of the language amongst the school community.

It’s good to learn Somali because it helps your brain with learning
