About our school

Sheffield Star Mandarin School is a not-for-profit voluntary organization providing Mandarin language and Chinese art tuition to children and young people aged 5-16 in Sheffield and surrounding areas. Established in Oct 1995, the school was initiated by several enthusiastic parents, who wanted their children to learn Chinese in a classroom environment.

In January 2007, the school became an affiliated member of the Confucius Institute at the University of Sheffield. The University provides the school teaching venues and expertise from people of higher calibre in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (TCFL). Mandarin language tuition is at six different language levels from beginners to the advanced. Currently, preparatory examination trainings are also available for GCSE and A-Level Chinese.

About our partnership

Sheffield Star Mandarin School’s partnership with Silverdale School is accreditation-centered. Throughout the Our Languages project, the school partnership has focused on developing a series of ten lesson plans that will lead towards an Asset Languages Breakthrough qualification in Mandarin Chinese. This collaborative work has involved regular meetings between the Schools and frequently drawing upon each other’s teaching resources. In addition, the school’s meetings with the 3 other partnership projects within the regional cluster, has enabled it to share ideas with teachers from Somali, Polish and Cantonese language schools in Sheffield and Leeds.
