About our school

Spinney Hill Gujarati Parents’ Association was established in 1988 by a group of Gujarati Parents living in the surrounding area of Spinney Hill Primary School and Community Centre in 1988. The parents recognized a lack of Gujarati language teaching in the mainstream school and understood that their children were missing out on their heritage language. The school serves the local community surrounding the Primary School and is open to students from all parts of Leicester. The school operates independently and works collaboratively with statutory and voluntary organisations.

Classes are held on a weekday for two hours for students aged 6 years and up. The tutors follow lesson plans for beginners’ classes to GCSE. The Spinney Hill Gujarati Parents’ Association is one of the first that uniquely offers all of its students Gujarati ITC – Keyboard Skills. As well as Gujarati keyboard skills, pupils are offered awareness of general IT skills. The majority of the students take advantage of achieving the GCSE accreditation well before the main Key Stage 4 GCSE examination.

About our partnership

The Spinney Hill Gujarati Parents’ Association is working in partnership with Coleman Primary School to create schemes of work covering 12 lessons. These lessons are now on offer to all learners in both schools and provide them with the opportunity to learn the Gujarati language. Classes are held at the mainstream primary school for one hour a week after school hours. At the end of twelve weeks, children will have learnt the Gujarati words for various topics, role played and learnt related Gujarati songs and the complete Gujarati alphabet and vowels chart. The partnership is giving the school access to qualified teachers as well as the opportunity to learn different styles of lesson delivery and methods to engage learners.
