Career development

The Our Languages project ran from 2007-2009. Please note that this website is no longer maintained. Content and links in this section, including linked pages, may be out-of-date.

Working with young people is immensely rewarding but demands a lot of commitment. Whether working with primary-age children or older students, in a mainstream or complementary school, teaching can be an exciting, creative and challenging profession. Importantly, in today’s world these roles are not fixed, and as you gain experience and qualifications, many new career paths can open up.

In this section we try to demystify the different ways of gaining qualifications that allow you to work with young people in mainstream schools. As the roles of Teaching Assistant (TA) and Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) both have the potential to involve support for children with community languages, Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) is no longer the only option.

We hope that colleagues and teachers will refer to these pages to update their awareness of the opportunities now available, and also share this knowledge with others. The aim of our project is to promote partnership, and partnership lies at the heart of the training system for teachers. We trust that the information we carry on the Our Languages website helps empower individuals from all communities to achieve their career goals in the world of education.
